Heitkamp Statement on Senate Passage of Immigration Reform

Washington, DC U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today released this statement following Senate passage of comprehensive immigration reform. Heitkamp voted in favor of the legislation, which passed with a bipartisan majority, 68-32.

Today, the Senate took a major step forward in reforming our outdated, broken immigration system. The legislation is not perfect, but it makes smart reforms, increases border security, and will stem the future flow of illegal immigration. For years, Washington has kicked the can down the road, instead of taking steps to reform immigration. We can’t afford to do this any longer. I ran for the U.S. Senate because I was tired of Washington’s insistence on ignoring the major problems facing our country. Throughout this process, I worked with members on both sides of the aisle and we found solutions, instead of ways to score political points.

Most importantly, I consulted extensively with North Dakotans. I listened to what my constituents wanted out of immigration reform. It was very helpful for me to consult with North Dakotans from all walks of life, including business, agriculture, research, higher education, and healthcare leaders to discuss our state’s needs. Their support for the bill was very encouraging.

This legislation makes a serious investment in securing our borders. Through an increase in border agents and other measures, there are significant steps in place to reduce the number of people entering our country illegally. Ensuring that we are on a track to finally secure our borders was a top priority of mine.

I am also incredibly proud that this bill permanently authorizes and enhances the Conrad 30 program. This allows international doctors to remain in the U.S. longer than their visas initially allowed under the condition that they practice in underserved areas such as rural communities. With such a demand in our state, it is common sense to make it easier for talented professionals to come here and practice.
