Congressman Cramer More Worried About His Job Than Farmers
Congressman Kevin Cramer – who once suggested North Dakota “can manage” without a Farm Bill – is more worried about his job than North Dakota farmers. In a closed-door meeting with his colleagues, he complained about how the failure to pass the farm bill would jeopardize his career.
According to POLITICO: “Cramer, a first-term lawmaker, read aloud an editorial to his colleagues from a North Dakota newspaper, arguing that failing to pass a farm bill could end his brief congressional career. In an interview with POLITICO, Cramer said Republicans — especially committee chairmen — who voted against the farm bill are “jeopardizing the whole majority.”
“The people paying the real price for the failure of the farm bill are hardworking North Dakota farmers and their families – and if Congressman Cramer can’t get a farm bill passed, their livelihoods should be his first priority – not his own skin,” said Brandon Lorenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “When Congressman Cramer is telling his colleagues that his head is on the chopping block – instead of raising heck about what’s happening to farmers – you know he’s gone Washington.”
Background:
Williston Herald Editorial: “Re-Election is no Guarantee for Cramer Just Because the [Farm Bill] Vote is on his Record.” “By failing its version of the bill, the House did a disservice to those farmers and ranchers… [Cramer] needs to make the farm bill his No. 1 priority, whether it is pushing to reconsider the House version or passing the Senate version… North Dakota voters have a history of electing candidates, not parties, and re-election is no guarantee for Cramer just because the vote is on his record.” [Williston Herald, Editorial, 6/22/13]
Cramer to House Republicans: I’m Worried About My Career.
