Fairfield: Jaeger’s defense of Constitutional Measure 1 is weak

Secretary of State candidate says Jaeger’s admission that he didn’t consult with citizengroups about the ramifications of Constitutional Measure 1 is disturbing

(BISMARCK, ND) – Secretary of State candidate April Fairfield released the following statement in response to Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s appearance on “News & Views” today…

“As I stated last week, April Fairfieldgovernment can only take away those rights from the people so long as the people willingly surrender those rights. Secretary of State Al Jaeger strongly supports Constitutional Measure 1, which asks North Dakotans to limit the time we now have to gather signatures to place a measure on the ballot. His defense of this important constitutional change is as weak as his admission that he didn’t consult with citizen groups on this measure is disturbing.

“Secretary Jaeger admitted that he did not consult with any citizen groups that have collected signatures for past ballot measures. You would think, regardless of their issue or ideology, that these groups could have provided valuable insight into the ramifications of the proposed constitutional change. The fact that Secretary Jaeger substituted his own judgment in place of the citizens shows that after 22 years in office he has lost touch.

“Constitutional Measure 1 is unnecessary. It is clear that we don’t need to change our state Constitution. It is also very clear that that, after 22 years, we need a new Secretary of State who will dedicate the time to work with the citizens to correct any inadequacies while also protecting their constitutional right to initiate measures to hold their leaders accountable.”
