Statement: One Week Later, Too Many Unanswered Questions in the Rauschenberger Affair

Serious questions remain about who knew what, when they knew it, and if there was a cover-up to conceal problems before the election.

(BISMARCK, ND) – Bob Valeu, Chairman of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, released the following statement regarding the lack of answers surrounding who knew what and when regarding Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger’s addiction.

“It’s been one week since the public first learned about Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger’s addiction problems. New information continues to leak out each day that raises more serious and troubling questions.

“The prominent involvement of Odney Advertising creates the impression that the governor, his staff, and Republican Party leaders have been concealing Rauschenberger’s condition from the public for the last several weeks. It certainly appears that Republican Party leaders regarded Rauschenberger’s addiction as a political problem to be covered up before the election rather than the personal health issue it is.

“North Dakotans have a right to know. Republican Party executive director Jason Flohrs told the Bismarck Tribune on Friday that the public has a right to know the sequence of events surrounding Rauschenberger’s addiction. Monday’s Grand Forks Herald editorial also demanded answers. Yet Republican Party leaders remain silent on a matter that directly calls into question their honesty with the voters of North Dakota. North Dakotans are waiting for answers to the questions we asked one week ago today; they are also entitled to answers to these six questions:

1) The Deputy Tax Commissioner stated last week that he knew of Rauschenberger’s addiction back in July. Who else knew and when did they know it?

2) When did the governor, his staff, and Republican Party leaders become aware of Rauschenberger’s addiction?

3) Did Republican Party leaders meet with Rauschenberger to discuss his addiction before last Tuesday’s incidents?

4) What role did Odney Advertising play before the incident and what role are they playing now?

5) Has the governor’s office been in contact with Odney Advertising regarding Rauschenberger’s addiction?

6) Does Odney Advertising plan to run Rauschenberger’s television and radio commercials while he’s on leave of absence?

“Again, we are asking these questions because North Dakotans expect and deserve full transparency and accountability from their state government.”
